Activities

Relaxation is the main aim of the game. Find the perfect way to relax by playing snooker, lazing round the pool or watching TV in our Lapa. A bar that will help even the most thirsty to quench their thirst is right at your elbows. Sit around the outside fire listening to the sounds of the bush or have a cosy winter evening inside the Lapa listening to all sorts of tall tales.

Paradise can be found for those who love butterflies and insects. The Orange-tip and African Monarch amaze with their colours and aerial acrobatics while many other species can be seen. Insects will make the day (or night) of any entomologist and to watch dung beetles sumo wrestling one another at a pile of dung makes for fascinating watching.

Game Drives are conducted twice daily in open Landover’s. Morning drives give you the opportunity to wake up early and enjoy the cool, fresh part of the day. Animals are just starting to get active and this is the perfect time to get out the vehicle and identify some tracks you may want to follow. Our game drives are popular for a reason… Encountering elephant or rhino remains a special occasion while the mysterious hippo can often be found wallowing in a cool pool of water. If that is not enough feast your eyes on the activities of the blue wildebeest, warthog and baboon whose antics will keep you entertained for hours. At night, sharp-eyed visitors might encounter leopards, spotted and brown hyenas or even bat-eared foxes. The best part about the night drive is reconnecting with life and spending time looking at the endless Milky Way. Over fifty mammal species can be found on Shelanti, some easy to find and other not.

Nature Walks are the perfect opportunity to concentrate on the smaller things the bush has to offer. These walks are dependent on the level of fitness of our guests and may last from thirty minutes to well over an hour.

Bird Watching. Birds abound at Shelanti and the birding enthusiast can have a delightful time trying to identify as many as possible of the 260 plus species occurring in our area. Included are the majestic Martial Eagle, the noble Verreaux's Eagle and the Fish Eagle. In the rainy summer months Shelanti is flooded with all the migrant birds returning from the colder north. Amongst these you may see Swallow-tailed Bee-eaters, Amur Falcons, many swallows, Levaillant's Cuckoo and Spotted Flycatchers.

Vulture Restaurant. Every Wednesday and Saturday food is dropped off for hundreds of vultures. Join us in the rewarding wait to see these endangered birds swoop down in a feeding frenzy. The most common vultures to be seen are White-backed, Cape and Lappet-faced but some of the rarer vultures do make unexpected visits... A Ruppell’s Vulture for example! Read more>>>

Rates: R150 per person. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Regret no children under the age of 6 allowed.

Breeding Program. Shelanti operates a breeding program that breeds rare and endangered species such as Sable, Roan, Disease free Buffalo, Black Impala, Heartwater Springbuck, Nyala and Golden Wildebeest. These antelope are monitored carefully in a camp system where births, deaths and illness can be recorded. If you have never seen these majestic animals in the wild join us in the camps where you can view and learn more about the care of wild animals.

Picnic in a hide can be the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Let us pack you a basket and drop you at a water hole where you can sit and watch the animals, bird and butterflies come down to drink.
